A step-by-step buyer guide on selecting basis weight from 30 GSM to 150 GSM. Learn how weight impacts thickness, liquid capacity, hand-feel, and container logistics shipping costs.

What Does GSM Mean in Nonwovens?

GSM stands for Grams per Square Meter (g/m²). It measures the areal density of the fabric. In nonwoven roll goods, GSM directly dictates the thickness, opaque barrier efficiency, tensile capacity, and raw material cost per square meter.

Application Spectrum by GSM Range

  • 30 – 40 GSM (Ultra-Lightweight): Surgical tape backings, diaper leg cuffs, light sanitizing alcohol prep pads, filtration layers.
  • 45 – 55 GSM (Standard Lightweight): High-volume baby wipes, restaurant dining table wipes, cosmetic cotton pads, disposable facial tissues.
  • 60 – 75 GSM (Medium-Weight Benchmark): Heavy-duty household kitchen towels, disinfecting wipes for fitness clubs and hospitals, automotive detailing towels.
  • 80 – 120 GSM (Heavy-Duty): Industrial machinery oil wipes, cleanroom wipes, commercial reusable floor mops, fresh meat absorbent cores.
  • 130 – 180+ GSM (Specialty Extra-Heavy): High-temperature sound deadening composites, heavy spill containment booms, thick orthopaedic cast padding.

Logistics & Shipping Cost Considerations

Higher GSM fabrics consume significantly more container space and weight. For example, a 40HQ ocean container can accommodate approximately 65,000 m² of 45 GSM fabric, but only about 32,000 m² of 90 GSM fabric. Aligning the minimum functional GSM with your product specifications avoids paying freight on excess material.
